109 Emergency Law Renewed

Parliament renewed the Emergency Law this afternoon. Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif had requested the renewal this morning on the president’s behalf. A quick Google search produced this 2003 press release from HRW. It could have been written today:

The Egyptian authorities demonstrated their fear of public scrutiny by the speed and stealth with which they renewed this deeply unpopular law. This approach shows real contempt for the government’s democratic processes.

UPDATE: According to a brief report on Al-Arabiya, the government detained 25 members of the Muslim Brotherhood in northern Egypt for putting up posters protesting the renewal of the Emergency Law.
