For the senseless provocation department, via Reuters:

Several Israeli cabinet ministers called on Sunday for a military operation to retake control of Gaza’s southern border and prevent Palestinian militants smuggling weapons from neighbouring Egypt.

  1. Who is provoking who here? You have to admit, the Israelis have a problem with weapons in Gaza considering rocket attacks have increased since the pullout. The solution? I have no idea. But in the meantime you can rest assured that the Palestinians in Gaza will continue to suffer.

  2. Did you see the news (I think it was today) that Ma’ariv reported that the Israelis are now thinking about using ‘smart bombs’ along the Philadelphi Corridor to take out arms-smuggling tunnels?

If we take as our starting-point that the Egyptian-Israeli peace is a good thing, then I think we have to be in favor of the demilitarization of Sinai. The Israelis would argue that that’s exactly what they’re trying to accomplish. But I doubt anyone thought Israel’s bombing the corridor was what Egyptian-Israeli security cooperation was supposed to look like. And I have to wonder if all this isn’t being discussed because the Egyptians busted those soldiers helping the smugglers for some kickbacks. I think the Israelis are talking about such extreme actions because they’re thinking that their partner in keeping guns out of Sinai and Gaza is helping to get guns into Gaza. But let’s not forget that the reason this is coming up at all is because a few were busted.

  3. And now Egypt is adding at least 3,000 troops to the border.
