408 European Diplomats Destroy Egyptian UNESCO Site

Cairo – European diplomats in four-wheel-drive cars have caused extensive damage to a fossilised whale lying for millions of years in the Egyptian desert, a security source said on Sunday.

“Whale Valley officials have informed the authorities that people from two diplomatic vehicles destroyed the fossil,” the source told reporters after the destruction was discovered 150km south of Cairo.

Two cars drove into the protected area on Friday and then refused to stop when asked to do so by wardens who nevertheless obtained the vehicles’ registration numbers which the source said were from “a European country”.

“The damage is more than ten million dollars,” the source said.

The site, known as Wadi Hitan (Whale Valley), was home to whales around 40 million years ago when the area was still under water. It is a Unesco World Heritage site and home to hundreds of of whale fossils. – Sapa-AFP

  1. WTF? Can’t the bloody police state fire at the tyres of cars that are about to run over priceless fossils? How bloody lame! (not to excuse the ridiculously vandalistic behaviour of dips, who should be fired immediately, but still)

  2. Which all proves my theory that as bad as Americans are as tourists in Europe, Europeans are orders of magnitude worse than Americans in the Middle East. Take a taxi down to the Egyptian Museum and watch some Italian women get off a bus dressed in tank tops and short shorts if you don’t believe me. You can stand by one of the guards and alternately ogle and stare in horror.

  3. AM, I just saw one of those teeny-shorted tourists today – walking bang through Midan Tahrir (not just getting on and off a bus, where the museum folks and all tourist-site people are used to seeing skimpies). I’m not sure that there’s all that much to choose between Americans and Europeans as tourists generally speaking (living off Tahrir I’ve seen my share of giggly blonde American girls happily chatting up leering touts), though the kind of American tourist that lands up in the Middle East is probably more likely to be earnest and sensitive than the average package-tour European tourist here for some sun, given the political baggage and higher travel costs of the Middle East for Amrikis.

And Elijah, I bow low at your felicity with the colourful insults. But what’s an embossed rascal, please?

  4. Much as I’d like to take the credit for the insults, I must confess that they’re from Shakespeare. And I’m not even that erudite. http://www.pangloss.com/seidel/Shaker/
